CHAPTER TWELVE

Morning sunlight flooded the conference room as Morgan and Derik updated their murder board with information about Daniel Turner. Photos of all three victims now formed a row across the top of the board, their lives and deaths connected by red yarn to various locations, programs, and potential suspects below. Coffee cups and pastry wrappers littered the table, evidence of their early start after the pre-dawn crime scene.

Morgan pinned Turner's prison release photo beside the crime scene image, the contrast jarring. In the release photo, taken just months ago, Turner smiled cautiously at the camera, hope visible beneath the wariness in his eyes. The crime scene photo showed that hope extinguished, his body arranged in a cruel parody of the work that had given him purpose after incarceration.

"Daniel Turner complicates things," Morgan said, tapping his file. "He wasn't at Lakewood with the others. He served his time at Riverdale Correctional in the next county." She pinned his prison intake photo to the board—a younger, angrier Turner with a healing black eye from his arrest altercation.

"So the prison itself isn't the connection," Derik concluded, rearranging some of their theories on the board. "That eliminates some of our suspects who only had access to Lakewood, including most of the staff we flagged yesterday."

Morgan nodded, the caffeine from her third coffee finally cutting through the fog of exhaustion. The board before them represented lives interrupted—not just the victims', but the ripple effects their deaths created. Marshall's therapy clients suddenly without support. Watson's employees without a boss or mentor. Turner's coworkers who had counted on him for the east wall project that would now remain unfinished.

FBI analysts had compiled comprehensive backgrounds on all three victims overnight, and Morgan and Derik now immersed themselves in these details, searching for the thread that connected them to their killer.

"Turner's serving three years for aggravated assault," Morgan read from his file. "Bar fight that got out of hand. Victim required hospitalization, but no permanent injuries."

"Not exactly a hardened criminal," Derik observed, scanning the paperwork. "First offense, voluntary anger management program while inside, model prisoner by all accounts."

Like the others, Turner had participated in rehabilitation programs—specifically a work-release program that taught construction trades. Upon release eight months ago, he was hired by Second Foundation Builders, a company founded by a former inmate that specializes in giving former offenders a second chance. His supervisor's statement, taken just hours ago, described Turner as "reliable, skilled, and determined to rebuild his life."

"Two different prisons, three different trades, but all part of state-sponsored rehabilitation programs," Morgan mused, drawing new connections on the board. "The killer is targeting success stories specifically. People who represent the system working."

She felt a chill at the thought, conscious of her own status as someone who had returned from incarceration to rebuild her life. The parallels weren't lost on her, though her circumstances had been different—wrongfully convicted, then exonerated and reinstated. Still, the pattern troubled her on a personal level she couldn't entirely separate from her professional analysis.
